Drought Update in the Southern Regions
The results of the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification published on December 2020 indicate that 1.35 million people in the South of Madagascar will face of acute food insecurity (IPC 3 or above) between January – April 2021 as a result of the combined effects of drought and COVID-19.

Refugees: In December, WFP finalized plans for the next cycle of distributions for the 41,000 refugees in Dzaleka Refugee Camp to be held in January 2021. Distributions will be maintained at bi-monthly intervals to reduce exposure for beneficiaries, partners and staff to COVID-19.

Lean Season Response: In December, cash distributions under the lean season rural response were rolled out in Machinga, Nsanje and Zomba districts. The districts will be supported for four months. As of 31 December, 40,096 households (180,000 beneficiaries) have received monthly cash support of MK 23,100 (USD 30) each for the month of December, representing a 71 percent completion.

Operational Updates
• On 06 January 2021, Lesotho moved back to Orange level restrictions, which implies tighter measures to curb the spread of COVID-19. . Orange restrictions are one level lower than hard lockdown measures (red).
• All ten districts of Lesotho are currently classified to be in Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) 3 or worse, with some 582,000 people in rural areas and a further 184,000 people in urban contexts experiencing acute food insecurity.
South Sudan: Humanitarian Snapshot (December 2020)

People continued to reel from the impacts of flooding which affected over 1 million people in 2020. Physical access to the hardest-hit Jonglei and Greater Pibor Administrative Area remained challenging, deepening people’s vulnerabilities. The latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) report estimated that 5.8 million people, almost half of the population, were likely to face Crisis (IPC Phase 3) or worse acute food insecurity in December, an increase by over 1 million from the same time last year. This included about 11,000 people likely to be in Catastrophe (IPC Phase 5) acute food insecurity in Pibor County. Food prices remained high. Sub-national violence and insecurity continued to uproot people. Some 25,000 people fled to Juba due to sub-national violence in Terekeka County, Central Equatoria.
