Head of anti-gang agency says more players involved in current conflict

Article content The Lower Mainland gang scene has changed in recent years with younger players joining fledging gangs that are contributing to an ongoing, violent conflict, the new head of B.C.’s anti-gang agency says. RCMP Asst. Commissioner Manny Mann, recently appointed chief officer of the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit, said there are now more gangs in B.C. and more rivalries than there were 11 years ago at “the height of the well-documented gang war.” We apologize, but this video has failed to load. Canadian MMA fighter killed in suspected gangland hit, cops fear retaliation Share this story icholarenasfan/YouTube Last week Todd Gouwenberg, 46, was shot and killed outside of the Langley Sportsplex in Langley, British Columbia. According to the Vancouver Sun Gouwenberg, an MMA veteran, had ‘lengthy ties’ to gangs in the Lower Mainland area of BC. The Sun reports that Gouwenberg’s first known interaction with criminal gangs was a decade ago when he was assaulted by a group of men belonging to the Red Scorpions gang. The Red Scorpions were founded in BC in the early 2000s and have since been linked to some of the bloodiest bouts of gang violence in the province. The gang is thought to be responsible for the 2007 condo suite massacre known as The Surrey Six Murders.

Police report 15 gang-linked killings in Metro Vancouver in 2021

Assistant Comm. Manny Mann, chief officer of the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit, the south coast agency focused on gang conflict, says Gouwenberg had been connected to the United Nations gang for almost 20 years. Investigators are not linking Gouwenberg s murder to the shootings of 20-year-old Bailey McKinney in Coquitlam on Monday or the April 18 killing of 31-year-old Harpreet Singh Dhaliwal in Vancouver, but they say the three targeted attacks show a disturbing trend because all happened in daylight, in busy areas full of children and families. Speaking at a news conference in Surrey, Mann says 15 gang-related killings have occurred across Metro Vancouver in 2021, after gang violence had subsided every year since 2017 with a low of 23 murders in the region last year.
