A rooftop garden in San Francisco. © Peter Dasilva for the New York Times. “The typical Urban Dweller today has no understanding of where or how food is produced/distributed. We have become dependent on huge, powerful, profit-minded corporations to bring huge quantities of food from industrial farms into our supermarkets – but the entire process is hidden, massively complex, and, ultimately, unsustainable.” In Part I of this Series, I made the case that Urban Agriculture has incredible potential; unfortunately, however, in America, it has a long way to go. © Marcel Gautherot Brasilia, the federal capital of Brazil and icon of the brazilian modernism. Initially planned by the urbanist Lúcio Costa for 500,000 inhabitants (now lives more than 2,5 million people). To honor the work of Oscar Niemeyer, we present after the brake some of the photos taken by the franco-brazilian photographer Marcel Gautherot during the construction of Niemeyer s emblematic buildings. Such as the Palácio do Planalto, Palácio de Alvorada (official residence of the President of Brazil), the Cathedral of Brasilia and the National Congress of Brazil.

They are very young (pretty obvious for this section, but still worth mentioning). They are doing some interesting designs, exploring different shapes and concepts, always challenging traditional program schemes. June 06, 2011 If you didn’t visit us this past week, you missed our coverage of the Pritzker Prize Ceremony! Check that and four amazing projects after the break. House on the Flight of Birds / Bernardo Rodrigues The house is located in the north side of S. Michael Island in the Azores. Since the microclimate of this farmland offers frequent wind and showers, the first design strategy was to block these winds with a wall and offer diverse patios and covered courtyards to protect against rain. These patios and courtyards also open all living spaces to the natural green by glass walls which receded from the exterior (read more…)
