Our friends from Weiss/Manfredi have shared their Portal to the Point Design Ideas Exploration proposal, a project exploring the connection between city and the environment for Point State Park in the City of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Currently, Point State Park, which is located at the geographic epicenter of Pittsburgh, does not take advantage of its potential to bridge the city, which is built on industrial accomplishments, with the river banks of the Allegheny and the Monogahela, both of which have granted Pittsburgh a prosperous ecological history. Weiss/Manfredi’s proposal attempts to stitch the city and its river banks together with a new brigde typology, a Mobius Pathway that is “not about the singular act of connecting two disparate parts, but about the comprehensive connectivity of a larger network.”

Image © Fantastic Norway When it comes to designing schools, security is always a big issue. This fact was thrown into sharp focus in December of 2012 after the Sandy Hook Tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut. Last year, we featured an article discussing how design can deal with tragedy - both in order to prevent it and how to deal with the aftermath. November 28, 2014 The Cover of The New Yorker s December 8th Issue. Image © The New Yorker / Bob Staake via newyorker.com With their latest cover, The New Yorker is addressing the tragic unrest in Ferguson which has followed Monday s decision not to indict the officer who shot Michael Brown in August, using an image of Eero Saarinen s iconic Gateway Arch. The image, designed by Bob Staake, shows the arch divided, black on one side and white on the other in reference to the racial tensions that underpin the dispute. At first glance, one might see a representation of the Gateway Arch as split and divided, says Staake, but my hope is that the events in Ferguson will provide a bridge and an opportunity for the city. To read more about the ideas behind Staake s design, visit The New Yorker s website.
