Pottawatomie County Commissioners have approved the purchase of a new emergency mass notification system called CodeRed.
According to County Emergency Manager Chad Larman, this system will allow the county to send out important information to people during emergency situations. We will also be able to send out targeted emergency notifications to subscribers located in a specific geographic areas within the county, Larman said.
He explained the primary function of the system will be to send out alerts during a disaster, such as evacuation orders and more. The system will also automatically send out notifications to those signed up if the National Weather Service issues a Tornado Warning, Severe Thunderstorm Warning or Flash Flood Warning if they are located inside that warning area, Larman said.

A test of Berrien County’s emergency alert systems was done this past Friday, although some residents have been wondering why they didn’t receive it. The county switched from the emergency sirens to the mobile device-based Integrated Public Alert and Warning System, or IPAWS, system this year. Berrien County Emergency Management Coordinator Rockey Adams tells WSJM News for people to receive the tests of the system, they need to set up their phone to receive them.
“Our best advice would be to get with the phone stores so that they could give advice about the particular phone, make, and model that you have,” Adams said. “Each one, especially with the Android platform, is a little bit different on how to turn those test alerts on.”
