Nepal politics: Oli dissolves Parliament: Nepal is facing a constitutional crisis as in-fighting intensifies

PM Oli s Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) and Prachanda s Community Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre) had been at loggerheads for decades before the two decided to put aside their differences in 2017 and contest the elections as an alliance.  Together, they won 174 seats in the 275-member house forming the National Communist Party but all has not been well since.  When the alliance formed the government, a power-sharing agreement was brokered between PM Oli and Prachanda which would see the former serve as prime minister for a period of two-and-a-half years before the latter took over the top spot for the remaining two-and-a-half years. However, the deal has never been ratified with PM Oli constantly delaying its tabling at the General Council.

Oli: Remarkable journey of student communist leader to Nepal power centre

Veteran Communist leader K P Sharma Oli kindled hopes for much-needed political stability in Nepal when he assumed power for the second time in 2018 after the Left alliance swept the historic parliamentary polls. However, his surprise move to recommend the dissolution of Parliament after weeks of power tussle within the ruling Nepal Communist Party dashed all hopes, once again created political instability and paved the way for a possible split in the largest communist party of the country. Oli, who joined politics as a student activist in his teenage and spent 14 years in jail for opposing the now-abolished monarchy, became Nepal s Prime Minister for a second time in 2018 as a joint candidate of the Left alliance.
