More than 70 Non-Governmental Organizations, Faith-Based Groups, and Academic Institutions Call for the Biden Administration to Repeal ICC Sanctions

The undersigned organizations urge the Biden Administration to engage constructively with the International Criminal Court (ICC). The U.S. government’s support for the ICC could help secure justice for victims in situations from Myanmar to Darfur, just as it helped facilitate the February 4 historic conviction of a former leader of an armed rebel group for war crimes and crimes against humanity in northern Uganda.

Joint Letter to the US on Dan Gertler s License

We write to you as members of Congolese and international civil society organizations. We would like to share with you our deepest concerns with regards to the decision of the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), dated January 15, 2021 and made public on January 24, 2021, granting a license to businessman Dan Gertler, who was sanctioned for corruption in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act in December 2017. Readers respond: Cleaning up dirty money Updated Dec 24, 2020; Congress recently passed the historic Corporate Transparency Act, ending the use of anonymous shell companies, as part of the National Defense Authorization Act. By advancing legislation requiring the disclosure of the true owners of companies formed in the United States, Sen. Ron Wyden and his congressional colleagues have denied kleptocrats and human rights abusers the ability to find financial safe haven in the United States. Anonymous shell companies enable tax evasion, kleptocracy and human rights abuses. Anonymity makes it nearly impossible for law enforcement to identify and prosecute criminals and facilitates the theft of trillions of dollars a year money desperately needed to help with the global post-COVID economic recovery.

EconomicPolicyJournal com: Congress Bans Anonymous Shell Companies

Saturday, December 12, 2020 Congress Bans Anonymous Shell Companies The Corporate Transparency Act, which was tacked onto the defense bill, would require corporations and limited liability companies established in the United States to disclose their real owners to the Treasury Department, reports The Washington Post. The measure passed the Senate on Friday with an 84-to-13 vote as part of the National Defense Authorization Act, which cleared the House earlier this week. Trump has pledged to veto the defense bill because it doesn’t include his demand to repeal liability protections for social media companies, so we shall see. Trump also opposes a clause that orders military bases named for Confederate leaders to be renamed.
