SIGI pledges to continue fight against death penalty

AMMAN A local women’s organisation working on the fair trials for women on death row in Jordan has pledged to continue calling for the gradual abolishment of the death penalty in Jordan.
The pledge was made during a virtual event on Monday marking the conclusion of a three-year project that was implemented by the Solidarity Is Global Institute (SIGI) titled Rule of Law and Fair Trials from a Gender Perspective Project .
The project was supported by the European Union.
“The project revealed that many women who are on death row do not get the proper legal counselling because their families refrain from appointing a good lawyer to defend them,” SIGI’s Executive President Asma Khader said.

AMMAN Activists on Wednesday said there is an urgent need to organise a nationwide campaign to strengthen their cooperation to address violence against women.
The call came during a virtual event that was organised by Solidarity Is Global Institute (SIGI) and attended by a group of experts on domestic violence.
The organisation, through its coalition “Fatmeh”, has called for an emergency meeting to discuss the recent reported increase in violence cases against women, said SIGI Executive Director Asma Khader.

Activists, MPs call for expanding women’s role in decision-making positions

AMMAN Female MPs and activists have called on the government to take advantage of the Kingdom’s marking of the centennial of the foundation of the Jordanian state by increasing women’s representation in decision-making positions.
Madaba MP Asma Rawahneh said the government needs to consider starting the new 100 years for Jordan by considering the increase of women in decision-making positions and eliminating all the laws that discriminate against them.
“It is time to change the culture that still perceives women in a certain stereotypical manner, especially when it comes to appointing individuals in high-level positions and increasing their presence in the legislative bodies,” Rawahneh said.
AMMAN Solidarity Is Global Institute (SIGI)-Jordan reported on Thursday that 197,000 Jordanians who are over the age of 35 have never been married.The number of people aged 35 years and above reached 3.027 million by the end of 2018, constituting 29.4 per cent of Jordan’s total population of 10.309 million, according to the 2018 gender indicators issued by the Department of
