Orban, leader of the National Liberal Party (PNL), who resigned half a month ago after his party failed to achieve its goal of scoring the best in the general election, secured 179 votes as he was supported also by deputies of two other coalition parties. His opponent, Alfred Simonis, candidate of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), got 110 votes. The first assembly of the lower house became a marathon and almost failed to complete the agenda, as the main opposition PSD was dissatisfied with the attempts of the ruling coalition to exclude social democrats from various leadership positions in the house, and once even threatened to boycott the meeting.
