Tourism, sport groups back Dublin rafting project

The planned White Water Rafting Centre in Dublin has won the support of tourism and sporting organisations as the city council prepares to make a new funding application for the controversial project.
The council has already asked for expressions of interest for the €25 million project which is planned for Georges Dock in the IFSC.
Both Sport Ireland and the Olympic Federation of Ireland say they will support a funding application as it would offer the country s only training facility for the Olympic sport of canoe slalom.
Fáilte Ireland also said it will support the development as it will add to the range of things to see and do in Dublin Docklands and has the potential to become a motivating visitor experiences playing an important role in encouraging visitors to stay longer in the area .

Irish Olympic Sailing boss James O’Callaghan was in climes sunnier than the team’s Dun Laoghaire Harbour Olympic Sailing HQ when he reported back to the Olympic Federation of Ireland last week on successful results achieved at January s training regatta in the Canary Islands.
As Afloat reported previously, Annalise Murphy took fifth overall in the ILCA Six class and Finn Lynch seventh in the ILCA Seven class at the Lanzarote Winter Series, a regatta that grew in significance in the pandemic. As the international calendar is disrupted for a second year, the January event gave Murphy, Lynch and other Irish campaigners the chance to be back on the race course for the first time since October s European Championships in Poland.

EOC approves election procedure after amendment to boost gender balance Wednesday, 27 January 2021
The European Olympic Committees (EOC) has approved its election procedure following amendments to the organisation’s statutes approved last month, which are aimed at boosting gender balance.
A motion was put forward by the Olympic Federation of Ireland (OFI) last month to ensure that a minimum of five of the 16 Executive Committee members be of each gender.
The statute amendment was passed at a virtual EOC General Assembly.
A total of 49 valid votes were cast, with 43 approving the motion and six against.
The EOC said the Legal Affairs Commission has drawn up the election procedure, following the amendment.

The US native who declared for Ireland by virtue of being the son of a Laois man has tweeted following the news from the Olympic Federation of Ireland that his qualification time set in 2019 will still make him eligible for Tokyo. Absolutely delighted to be nominated for my second summer Olympic Games for Ireland. It is such a great honor to be selected.
