A pedestrian is dead after being struck by a vehicle in a parking lot Tuesday evening in Northeast Iowa.
The Iowa State Patrol says the incident occurred in the 100 block of 1st Street Southwest in Oelwein shortly before 6 p.m. A 2014 Ford Explorer driven by 72-year-old Richard Nissen of Oelwein was pulling out of its parking space when it hit a 54-year-old Jacqueline Lensing, also of Oelwein, who was crouched down in front of the vehicle, apparently out of the driver’s view.
The Oelwein Police Department assisted at the scene and the accident remains under investigation.
Authorities have released the name of a pedestrian who was struck and killed by an SUV in Oelwein.
The accident happened at about 5:45pm Tuesday night (May 11), in the parking lot of the Oelwein American Legion, at 108 1st Street SW in Oelwein.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, 54 year old Jacqueline Lensing of Oelwein was crouched down in front of a Ford Explorer driven by 72 year old Richard Nissen of Oelwein. When Nissen attempted to drive out of the parking lot, his SUV struck Lensing.

Lensing was taken to MercyOne Hospital in Oelwein, where she was pronounced dead.

The name of the victim has not been released pending notification of family and the driver of the SUV has not been identified. The Oelwein Police Department assisted at the scene and the accident remains under investigation.
Smell of Drugs Tips Off Deputies in Fayette County Arrest
The odor of illegal substances is what led authorities to arrest an Oelwein man.
At about 4:45pm Thursday (May 6) Fayette County deputies attempted to serve papers at a residence at 228 7th Avenue SE in Oelwein. After officers noticed the smell of illegal drugs coming from the residence, a search warrant was issued.
During the search, deputies found and seized several types of illegal substances, pills and paraphernalia.

The resident, 24 year old Christopher Carreon of Oelwein was then arrested on charges of Introducing Contraband, Possession of Marijuana-1st Offense, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
