Belgium ‘treating everyone as vulnerable’ as cautious reopening stands in stark contrast to UK

Belgium has almost caught up with the UK in its vaccine rollout, despite effectively starting two months later. Yet there is no question of Belgium having a “freedom day“, as Britain has planned with much fanfare for Monday.
Officials say they see Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s plan as a “huge gamble”, as the country proceeds with caution, particularly in regard to the old and vulnerable.
The nation still has strict containment measures in place, with work-from-home the norm, masks still in use, and lots of space between café tables. But it has learned the lessons from hasty reopenings over the past year-and-a-half, both at home and in neighbouring countries: last week, the Netherlands had to humiliatingly reimpose pandemic restrictions, just two weeks after lifting them.
