The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) ruled that referring to Joe Biden as the President-Elect on November 9 was not in breach of its Code of Fairness, Objectivity, and Impartiality.
The Executive Complaints Forum of the BAI considered and rejected four complaints in meetings held in October, November, and December 2020.Â

Among the four complaints was one which took issue with the November 9, 2020 broadcast of RTÃ Oneâs Six One News, which discussed the US Presidential Election, which was held on November 3, 2020.
Major media outlets in the US first began to call the election in Joe Bidenâs favor on November 7.
RTÉ’s Liveline was the subject of a complaint to the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BA) after one listener alleged that presenter Joe Duffy had “criticised and denigrated President Trump”.
The person complained about the June 4 broadcast of the Radio 1 show, which featured an interview with former US Ambassador to the UN and member of the US Democratic Party Samantha Power.
He said that the segment amounted to a “party-political broadcast on behalf of the Democratic Party which lasted for 45 minutes without interruption.”
He also claimed that “the presenter criticised and denigrated President Trump by showing his obvious dislike of the president, bordering on hatred. The complainant states that he would not expect the presenter of Liveline to reveal his biased opinion during an interview.”
The complaint was made about a news report on the Six One News on RTÃ One aired on 9 November 2020, which was covering the 2020 US election.
Aidan McGrath took exception to RTÃ referring to Joe Biden as the President Elect and claimed RTÃ had shown bias by giving Biden the title when the other candidate, Donald Trump, had not conceded the election.
The Forum also said the complainant was of the view that the use of the words âwithout evidenceâ by the reporter when referring to allegations of irregularities in voting in the election, displayed bias on the part of the broadcaster.
