ECONOMYNEXT – In a new single-day vaccination record for the country, Sri Lanka administered 515,830 doses of COVID-19 vaccines on Thursday (29), the health ministry’s epidemiology unit said.
A breakdown of Thursday’s rollout is as follows:
Sinopharm, first dose: 418,494
Sinopharm, second dose: 56,738
Pfizer-BioNTech, first dose: 38,430
Moderna, first dose: 2,168
Total: 515,830
With over seven million first doses and 1.6 million second doses of Sinopharm administered so far as of Thursday (29), the Chinese jab accounts for nearly 78 percent of Sri Lanka’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout.
Sri Lanka had to rely on Sinopharm after long delays in obtaining Western and Indian-made vaccines, Lalith Weeratunga, the chairman of Presidential Task Force for National Deployment and Vaccination Plan for COVID-19 Vaccine told reporters Thursday.
COVID-19 pandemic is one of the most defining moments of our times and it has upended normal life and established systems across the globe with devastating and far-reaching impacts not only on health, but on the economy, society, multilateral trade, cooperation and aid. While those disruptions have been destabilising, they have also provided opportunities to discover and develop new models and pathways in many areas, including health, education, business, agriculture and trade. As Winston Churchill once said, “A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty”. Prof. Mehmet Yildiz said adversity is a blessing in disguise because it helps to create new neural pathways in the brain, which is an essential factor for neuroplasticity and resilience.
