The bill was parked for the rest of that Parliament’s term, but revived by the current Minister for Internal Affairs, Jan Tinetti, who plans to include it in the legislation which will now be allowed to continue its journey through the House. Like most Government policy, the changes were subject to a Regulatory Impact Statement (RIS), which assessed potential benefits and potential pitfalls. In the RIS, officials expressed doubt the changes would have an impact on women’s rights and protections, assessing this risk as “low” or “perceived”. They cast doubt on fears the changes would create opportunities for “‘predatory men to abuse access to women-only spaces (eg changing rooms and refuges) and allow men to access women-only resources and services (eg single-sex schools or sports teams)”.

Onshore conventional gas industry update
The orderly restart of the onshore conventional gas industry is on track with an expected jobs boost for south-west Victoria and Gippsland in the coming years thanks to the lifting of the moratorium by the Victorian Government.
The Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions (DJPR) this week updated the industry regarding progress towards the 1 July 2021 restart and the introduction of interim regulations, effectively extending the previous ones for a short period while larger regulatory reform is finalised.
Victoria’s onshore Petroleum Regulatory Framework was reviewed by the Victorian Gas Program and found to be robust for managing environmental and safety risks, which are the aspects that will need oversight initially when onshore conventional gas activities return from 1 July 2021.
