A new coalition of health and education experts has met for the first time today (Tuesday 9 March) to look at the impact of the pandemic on the mental.
Many children and young people have shown remarkable resilience. Some have benefited from and enjoyed spending more time at home with their parents or siblings. But we know a significant number have really struggled with their mental health and wellbeing during this time.
As the Sunday Express campaign on Generation Lockdown has rightly highlighted, the impact of being away from school, friends and routine had taken its toll on some. This is something I take extremely seriously and am committed to making sure the support to keep our children mentally healthy is readily available.
That is why this Friday I announced that we are investing £79 million in children and young people’s mental health services. This funding will grant almost 22,500 more children and young people access to community mental health services such as talking therapies and cognitive behavioural therapies which we know work well and will enable 2,000 more young people to access eating disorder services.
