By Monica Baskin COVID-19 has brought newfound attention to an enduring problem in Alabama and the U.S. – the deadly consequences of racial disparities in health care. Recent UAB research found that Black individuals experience COVID-19 infections at three times the rate of whites, with twice the rate of death. This disproportionate impact is true across the U.S. and is related to systemic racism that creates barriers to health care and contributes to higher rates of chronic disease. These structural issues may be more evident because of COVID-19. But they are all too familiar in Alabama. Our state ranks near the bottom in terms of overall health, measured by life expectancy and quality of life. But our African-American population suffers more than its share of the problem. Broadly speaking, Black Alabamians tends to live in poorer communities with less access to care, which plays out in every aspect of their health. UAB s Office of Community Outreach Celebrates 25 Years

By Joseph D. Bryant UAB News December begins a yearlong commemoration marking the 25th anniversary of the Office of Community Outreach and Engagement at the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB. Since its creation in 1995, the office has dedicated itself to increasing cancer education and awareness in medically underserved populations and addressing health disparities throughout Alabama and beyond. A series of public virtual activities is planned throughout 2021 to mark the office’s landmark year and showcase the history of the office and how it has evolved to positively impact communities in the future. The first event is a virtual “Fireside Chat” featuring pioneers of the office, including Edward Partridge, M.D., former director of the Cancer Center, who will discuss the earliest days of outreach initiatives.

SHP partners with O’Neal Cancer Center, UAB Medicine for Genetic Counselor Fellowship Details The UAB School of Health Professions has partnered with the School of Medicine and the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB to offer a one-year post-graduation fellowship to a student in the M.S. in Genetic Counseling program. The fellowship will provide advanced clinical training, research and teaching opportunities in the area of cancer genetic counseling.  The student who is selected for the position will have full tuition support, be employed by the UAB Department of Genetics, and earn an educational stipend during the fellowship year in exchange for a four-year post-graduation commitment to work at UAB.
