Amy Raymond, veteran editor at The Oklahoman, dead at 45 Oklahoman I ve known Amy Raymond for a quarter century, dating back to a visit to our alma mater, Oklahoma Christian University, where I met the next generation of journalism whiz kids at the student newspaper, The Talon.  Soon after graduation, two of those whiz kids, Amy and fellow student, Christy Watson, joined The Oklahoman s newsroom. They were among the best of the best. Christy s passion in covering education led her to take jobs beyond The Oklahoman, working on behalf of schools, and she is currently communications director for the Oklahoma State School Boards Association.

Moore Says SB 229 Could Benefit Local Schools in a Major Way

By News Director Jared Atha A bill that passed through the Oklahoma House of Representatives recently should help local brick-and-mortar public schools says District 57 Rep. Anthony Moore, R-Clinton. Moore says Senate Bill 229, or better known as the Redbud School Funding Act, proposes using medical marijuana taxes and the Common School Building Equalization Fund to provide annual per-student funding grants to eligible school districts and charter schools. He says the act, if signed by Gov. Kevin Stitt, could be a big boost for local schools in western Oklahoma. Currently more than 100 schools in the state that have joined together to file a lawsuit against the state school board for their decision made in March, requiring property taxes to be split evenly between public and charter schools.

Colorado and Oklahoma were both home to wide-scale teacher walkouts and strikes this spring, but it wasn’t enough to sway voters to raise education funding. In Colorado, a proposal to raise income taxes for some was easily defeated. In Oklahoma, voters narrowly rejected a ballot measure to free up more existing revenue for schools. The ballot questions came as support for teacher raises is near an all-time high. According to a recent poll by the journal
