The Oakland Unified School District had previously planned to begin in-person classes on January 25th (yesterday), but obviously did not follow through due to the COVID surge over the holidays. Because the stay-at-home orders have been lifted and ICU capacity has improved, OUSD hosted an informational meeting last night regarding their plans for reopening. Updates can be found here. Benicia Unified School District had 303 third grade students during 2018-2019 school year, according to the California Department of Education. Los Angeles Unified School District had the highest number of third grade students enrolled in California with 45,857. According to numbers provided by the National Center for Education Services, California is expected to see a decrease of three percent in public elementary and secondary school enrollment from 2017-2029. The state expected to see the largest drop in enrollment is New Mexico with a projected 12 percent decrease, while Washington D.C. is projected to see a 14 percent increase over the same time period.

OUSD holds info night on returning to school in person By KTVU staff OUSD to hold info sessions for reopening schools OAKLAND, Calif. - The Oakland Unified School District on Monday evening will host an informational session for families about plans for re-opening schools for in-person classes.  There had been a plan to reopen schools on Monday but that was scrapped back in December when the number of Bay Area coronavirus cases began to surge. Many teachers and parents want to see the number of virus cases level off before going back to in-person learning. One Oakland parent named Gabrielle told KTVU on Sunday that she is hesitant about going back to school.
