Oakland County is setting aside 5,000 doses of the Johnson & Johnson single-shot COVID-19 vaccine for residents ages 18-24 to help ensure college students get vaccinated and don’t spread the virus.

The state s latest eligibility benchmark couldn t have come any sooner as Michigan s infection rate has continued to skyrocket days after it was identified as having the biggest increase in new cases.
Michigan s leaders have said they don t plan on enacting more restrictions on businesses or schools. Instead, the state has opted to ramp up vaccines in an effort to boost immunity. So far, it s been successful among the groups that have been eligible for treatment.
To reach their most underserved communities, metro Detroit health departments are getting out extra doses of COVID-19 vaccine they are receiving from the federally run mass vaccination site inside Ford Field.
More than 14,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine have been given to health departments in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties and the City of Detroit from the Ford Field vaccination site, with more on the way.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) clinic can vaccinate 5,000 people a day inside Ford Field, the domed home of the Detroit Lions in downtown Detroit.
But for the first six weeks of the clinic, officials said 7,020 extra doses of vaccine are to be given each week to the health departments to use for mobile clinics and outreach programs to target the most vulnerable neighborhoods and communities in the region.

Pontiac – Gov. Gretchen Whitmer joined other officials Friday to kick off the opening of another large-scale COVID-19 vaccine site in Oakland County.
Whitmer said by increasing vaccinations across Michigan and following safety protocols – including masking and social distancing – the state could meet its goal of vaccinating 70% of residents by this summer.
“We all know what needs to be done,” said Whitmer. “…I think we can reach that goal by the Fourth of July and enjoy it like we should.”
Oakland County Executive Dave Coulter joined Whitmer, Pontiac Mayor Deirdre Waterman and others at the United Wholesale Mortgage sports complex in Pontiac.
