The Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi will open as a COVID-19 vaccination site Saturday, with more than 300 Oakland County Health Division employees planning to inoculate about 3,000 people.
Those to be vaccinated will receive the Moderna shot. All of the appointment slots are full, the county said Thursday in a release.
The county health division received 7,200 doses of the Moderna vaccine this week, the most of any week since vaccines started to roll out in December.
The health division notified those eligible to make an appointment. More than 170,000 people have signed up for the county s Save Your Spot list.
Vaccines will be administered from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
As many teachers across Michigan prepare to head back to classrooms full of students, many are still waiting to get a COVID-19 vaccine.
On Jan. 11, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Michigan Department of Health and Human Services officials announced the state was moving to a new phase of vaccination. Phase 1B which includes individuals 65 years and older, and frontline, essential workers in critical infrastructure, such as education, food and agriculture, utilities, law enforcement, firefighters, corrections officers, and transportation and grocery store workers.
Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, Michigan’s chief medical executive and chief deputy for health, said the state is pleased to move forward in the next stage of vaccinations.

The federal government gave states even more incentive this week to make sure they re getting COVID-19 shots injected into arms as quickly as possible.
States that don t efficiently immunize their people and report the data accurately won t get as many doses of COVID-19 vaccines as states that do. The change in the way vaccines are being distributed comes as the virus continues to spread across the nation, filling hospital beds and killing people at a record pace.

ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Oakland County Health Division said the demand for the COVID vaccine is far greater than the county’s supply.
The county has scheduled 17,000 appointments for vaccines so far, but can’t continue for the rest of the hundreds of thousands of people who are eligible.
Phase 1B means residents who are 65 and older can make appointments to get the vaccine, along with essential workers.
Oakland County is getting 1,950 doses of the vaccine each week. There are more than 215,000 people in Oakland County who are 65 and older.
