There are high hopes in the community for a newly energized school board as four new members set to take office in January pledging to disentangle the multiple crises facing the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD), including shuttered classrooms and COVID-19 enforced distance learning, ongoing threats of austerity-driven budget cuts and state-enforced demands to close more neighborhood schools.
This week, the Oakland Post interviews two new board members, Sam Davis and VanCedric Williams. Last week, the Post published interviews with Mike Hutchinson (D-5) and Clifford Thompson (D-7).

OAKLAND, Calif. - Pixar s newest film, Soul, features the life of a middle school band teacher looking for his big break.
And one Oakland middle school s jazz band got its big break too, playing in this historic film.
Some members of the Edna Brewer Middle School Jazz Band played Things Ain t What They Used to Be in the film after a chance dining experience by Pixar producer Dana Murray who was eating at Yoshi s in Jack London Square.
Marshawn Lynch holding food giveaway at Emeryville soul food restaurant

EMERYVILLE, Calif. - Marshawn Beast Mode Lynch, the former NFL star, philanthropist and Oakland native, is holding a food giveaway Wednesday at his East Bay restaurant.
Employees at Rob Ben s Neighborhood Soul on San Pabloe Avenue in Emeryville will give out food boxes and hot meals, from 11:30 a.m. until 3 p.m.
Lynch bought the restaurant a few years back from 79-year-old owner Cassie Nickelson, who decided to retire from 50 years of serving soul food classics like red beans and rice, wings, fried catfish, oxtails, and macaroni and cheese.
Oakland teen and founder of science education company gets accepted to dream school Stanford

Ahmed Muhammad learned that he got into his first choice Stanford, as part of its restrictive early action option and that the university would cover his tuition costs. I’m beyond excited, the Oakland Technical High School senior told KTVU.
The teen got in with an impressive 4.7 GPA and an SAT score of 1540, receiving a perfect 800 in the Math section and a 740 in the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section. He had taken the college entrance exams his sophomore year and also received high scores in the SAT s subject tests receiving an 800 in math and a 790 in chemistry.
