OAKLAND, Calif. - Oakland students and their parents held a socially-distanced Zoom-In protest outside of Oakland Tech High School Friday morning, to voice their support for a plan to reopen schools.
All of Oakland Unified School District s 36,000 students have been doing distance-learning instruction since March. Schools around the world have been open. Schools in the Bay Area are open. The science is completely clear - there s no reason to wait, said Oakland Unified School District alum and parent Lauren Hunt.

Getting into science is often difficult for some kids. It’s something Ahmed Muhammad learned quickly while babysitting his niece and nephew.
Muhammad is an 18-year-old senior from Oakland, California, who attends Oakland Tech High School. One day he asked his niece and nephew if they wanted to do science, and he was distraught by their reaction.
“I think Amir is like 6 or 7 and Ilah I think she just made 9. Whenever I babysit them, we do things like play chess, play video games, read books or watch TV or whatever. When I tried to do science with them, they were like, ‘No, I hate science. I’m bad at it.’

The Christmas Day release of the new Pixar/Disney animated feature film Soul on Disney+ marked the film debut of young, local talent a group of 17 students from Oakland United School District. Soul is about a middle school music teacher, played by Jamie Foxx, so it s only appropriate the film has a scene featuring real middle school musicians.
Edna Brewer Middle School music director Zack Pitt-Smith explained how his students were discovered by Pixar, which is headquartered in nearby Emeryville.
