Mohawk Valley organizations receive EPA brownfield grant funding

Many of the communities do not have enough money or resources needed to research and mitigate potential brownfield sites.  Mugdan said the $8000,000 is slated for updating brownfield inventory, 15 site assessments, cleanup at five properties and developing six reuse plans. The money also will help a vacant mixed-use apartment complex in Little Falls.  “This is going to be a huge shot in the arm for many communities dealing with old tanneries, old mills, old factories that they just don’t have the money to start to deal with,” Morawksi said.  Mugdan said the $300,000 to Mohawk Valley EDGE will cover site inventory, 14 site assessments and help develop three reuse plans. The money also will help at a three-story housing unit in Utica, Rome’s eastern section and Little Italy neighborhoods and a former gas station in Sherrill.  

2021 Oneida County State of the County Address:

The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the county’s perseverance through it were the main aspects Tuesday of Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente Jr.’s State of the County address.  In the roughly half-hour address, Picente talked about county-run vaccination sites, mask mandates and honored the memory of the more than 400 county residents who lost their lives due to the pandemic.  Picente further spoke on economic development, the county’s fiscal health and a variety of plans proposed to help the county move forward, powered by federal money from American Rescue Plan funding.  “These last 12 months have been challenging for everyone to say the least,” Picente said. “But through it all, we channeled our history as a people, determined not to let this or any crisis define us.
