Coronavirus update: New cases dip in Onondaga County, crowded hospitals get some relief Updated Dec 18, 2020; Facebook Share Syracuse, N.Y. – Onondaga County reported 401 new coronavirus cases today and three additional deaths. While the county continues to see high levels of new cases the numbers are declining a bit. This week’s average daily number of new cases was 331, down from a daily average of 359 last week. But Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon warned the caseload may surge again if people don’t limit their upcoming holiday gatherings to small immediate family groups. The three deaths included two more nursing home residents and a 48-year-old man. The county’s coronavirus death toll now stands at 337.

Dennis Nett | dnett@syracuse.com Facebook Share Syracuse, N.Y. – Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon today said he is sending 175 additional county workers to help investigate new cases of coronavirus, the flood of which continues to overwhelm the health department. The added personnel will roughly triple the number of county employees available to contact people who test positive for the virus and track down others they may have infected. Reinforcements are necessary to deal with caseloads that have averaged more than 300 a day in December, up from roughly 40 a day in October.
