4 Killed in Rome Fire - Identities, Cause Under Investigation

Four people were killed Tuesday night in a house fire on Rome-Oriskany Road in the City of Rome. The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office says the bodies of the four adults were removed by the Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office for positive identification. The Sheriff’s Office will release the names of the victims when identification is confirmed. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Firefighters were called to 7736 Rome-Oriskany Road just before 9 p.m. When they arrived, they saw flames coming from the west-facing side of the house, Rome Fire Chief Thomas Iacovissi said. Crews entered each of the two bedrooms on the east-facing side of the home, where they found a body in each of the bedrooms.

Firefighters were initially unable to enter the residence to fight the fire. The house was completely destroyed by the flames.

The Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office will work to identify the four people killed, deputies said. Deputies and firefighters are still on scene. Rome-Oriskany Road remains closed. Rome structure fire kills 4 at residence on Rome Oriskany Road

The investigation into a house fire that killed four people Tuesday night in Rome continued Wednesday, Rome fire officials reported. Four people, two men and two women who appear to be residents of the home, died in the fire on Rome Oriskany Road in the area of Monument Road, officials said. The cause of death, as well as the cause of the fire, has not yet been determined. It has not yet been determined whether the fire was suspicious in nature, officials said. Rome firefighters received a call at about 8:59 p.m. Tuesday, with at least one of the initial calls from a neighbor. About three-quarters of the house was engulfed in flames upon arrival, and, upon hearing there could be people inside, firefighters entered the front and back of the house, officials said.
