After months of delay, EU nations finally ratify €750bn recovery fund

After six months of parliamentary debates, internal discussions and judicial procedures, all 27 EU countries have ratified the legal instrument that underpins the bloc s €750-billion recovery fund, paving the way for money to reach national governments by July. The last two pending green-lights were those of Austria and Poland, which were completed on Thursday following a positive vote in their respective parliaments. The Polish ruling coalition came close to breaking up due to disagreements regarding the country s plan to spend and invest its allocated share of the funds. The legal instrument, known as the Own Resources Decision, will enable the European Commission to borrow the necessary cash on the financial markets and repay it over the next decades - by 2058 at the very latest.

Recovery and Resilience Facility: Finland submits official recovery and resilience plan

Met dank overgenomen van Europese Commissie (EC), gepubliceerd op donderdag 27 mei 2021. The Commission has received an official recovery and resilience plan from Finland. This plan sets out the reforms and public investment projects that Finland plans to implement with the support of the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF). The RRF is the key instrument at the heart of NextGenerationEU, the EU s plan for emerging stronger from the COVID-19 pandemic. It will provide up to €672.5 billion to support investments and reforms (in 2018 prices). This breaks down into grants worth a total of €312.5 billion and €360 billion in loans. The RRF will play a crucial role in helping Europe emerge stronger from the crisis, and securing the green and digital transitions.

Thank you and good morning everyone, As Paschal just said, we are happy to have this chance to meet in person and for this we are thanking the Portuguese Presidency for hosting all of us in an excellent way. And this is due to the progress that was made in the vaccination campaigns and also the improving health situation here in Portugal, which is of course great news. There was a certain optimism in our meeting, and pride even, for decisions taken in the last year and indeed, as vaccinations accelerate restrictive measures are easing and economic activity is gathering pace.
