Sailors from across Africa, Asia and Europe have convened at the Millennium Resort Mussanah for the start of the Mussanah Open Championship.
Over the next week, 102 sailors from 17 countries will compete in 49er, 49er FX, Laser, Laser Radial and RS:X classes where the African and Asian sailors will be looking to secure their place at this year s long-awaited Tokyo 2020 Olympics at the final qualification event before the Games.
International race management officials selected by the Asian Sailing Federation (ASAF) will join their counterparts from Oman Sail, organisers of the event, on Saturday 3 April for the first day of competitive sailing with clear skies expected and an average temperature of 31c with wind of 12 knots providing perfect conditions on the first day.

Sayyid Theyazin visits headquarters of Oman Sail

Muscat: His Highness Sayyid Theyazin bin Haitham bin Tarik Al Said, Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth visited the headquarters of Oman Sail at The Wave-Muscat, where he got information about the nature of work of the organisation and its contributions at the national level in various spheres.
During the visit, a video was screened, which shed light on the mission of Oman Sail and the role it plays in revitalising the glory of Oman’s navy history and the role it plays in the international arena.
The video presentation also shed light on the efforts of Oman Sail in providing youth with the opportunities for discharging their national duty in various spheres.
Oman Sail opens registration for youth sailing event Mussanah Race Week

Muscat: Registration for the annual youth sailing event Mussanah Race Week is now open with young sailors from around the world are welcome to train and compete in Oman.
Set to take place in Al Mussanah Sports City from 26-31 October 2021, the event has traditionally brought world and continental youth champions to the Sultanate’s shores to sail against the best young sailors. This year, for the first time in the event’s history,Oman Sail will mark the 11th edition by introducing a boat class for young persons with disabilities known as‘RS Venture’, alongside the Optimist and Laser 4.7 classes.
Oman Sail programme seeks to empower differently-abled youth

Muscat: Oman Sail has resumed its SailFree programme with COVID-19 precautions in partnership with bp Oman and Oman’s Paralympic Committee.
SailFree, one of bp Oman’s social investment programmes, aims to empower Omani disabled youth. Phase two of the programme, in which participants learn sailing and practice leadership, resumed on January 17 after receiving the go-ahead from relevant government entities.
bp’s social investment manager Shamsa Al Rawahi commented: “We believe in embracing diversity and providing equal opportunities. The SailFree programme is a unique example of that. We’re delighted to see it safely move forward and pave the way for Omanis to compete in future national, regional and international championships.”
