The history of early Black settlers is told through personal stories and artifacts. Some were enslaved when they arrived. Others came to Oregon by choice.
All faced legal and social inequities, said Zachary Stocks, the executive director of Oregon Black Pioneers, an organization dedicated to preserving and presenting the experiences of Blacks in Oregon.
Stock said he hopes the exhibit gets people thinking.
“When we talk about our state’s history and the pioneer narrative that defines the Oregon experience, we don’t often think about the Black individuals who were also part of that experience,” he said.
Oregonians donated record $5.2 million to Cultural Trust in 2020
SALEM, Ore. (KTVZ) – Donations to the Oregon Cultural Trust surpassed $5 million for the first time ever in 2020, as generous Oregonians responded to the cultural community’s urgent need due to losses suffered during the pandemic.
The $5.2 million in donations represents a 13 percent (close to $605,000) increase over 2019 and will support grant awards to cultural organizations across the state this summer.
“We asked Oregonians to help us protect Oregon culture and their response exceeded our expectations,” said Cultural Trust Executive Director Brian Rogers. “These funds will go a long way in helping us support the cultural community’s recovery in 2021.”
Meet Corvallis’ New NAACP President Jason J. Dorsette
February 6, 2021
Jason J. Dorsette takes the lead at the NAACP Corvallis/Albany branch as racial equality and equity are once again in the national spotlight, dominating this past year’s discussions after the widely publicized deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor at the hands of law enforcement.
Dorsette originally hails from High Point, North Carolina, which is notably the furniture capital of America, if not the world. He relocated to Corvallis in 2014 for a job at Oregon State University, where he currently works in the Educational Opportunities Program, which academically supports traditionally underserved groups such as students of color and those with marginalized identities. He’s also pursuing a PhD from the educational policy and equity program, looking at the ways racial identity impacts the perception of the environment.
