Lawmakers are considering a bill that would give Oregon the most sweeping state oversight of health care mergers in the country.
But while supporters say House Bill 2362 would counter increased costs and curbs on care, opponents say it goes too far.
The system contemplated by chief sponsor Rep. Andrea Salinas, D-Lake Oswego, is drawing support from pro-abortion and death-with-dignity groups as a response to one slice of the merger trend: the rapid growth of health care entities affiliated with the Catholic Church, which restrict care for women and transgender people.

SALEM, Ore. (KTVZ) The Oregon Health Authority released statistics Thursday that showed Oregon hospitals were profitable as 2020 ended, despite the COVID-19 pandemic challenges. But the hospitals association responded that other data paints clear a less-rosy picture.

Data released by the Oregon Health Authority today shows hospitals ended 2020 in the black, with a surplus for the year of $483 million representing a 3.3% statewide operating margin, including CARES Act funding. Hospitals statewide ended the year with positive margins and net patient revenue returning to trend in Q3 and Q4 after falling sharply in the second quarter of 2020.

At least 20 people were killed and dozens others hurt when a Mexico City Metro rail overpass collapsed onto a road Monday night right as a train was passing overhead, Mexican authorities said early Tuesday. A support beam gave way on the Metro 12 line overpass, Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said, adding that a car is trapped underneath the rubble on the road below and there are still people trapped on the train, which split in two and was suspended precariously, hindering rescue efforts.
