Each step up the Saddle Mountain two-and-a-half-mile long trail reveals a timeless place born of events that are 16 million years old.
The site dates to a time when a thick layer of Columbia River basalt flowed into the ocean from distant eastern Oregon. Eventually, the ground rose and the mountain was born.
Today, the basalt breaks away in chunks, cracks, crevices and bands that show off eons of geologic time.
The trail opens onto grassy meadows covered in a riot of wildflowers.
Although water is rare, cool springs seep and replenish a surprising number of plants with a distinct sound that also soothes the soul.

Depoe Bay assumes the correct title of
the Whale Watching Capital of the Oregon Coast. A tall sea cliff bounds the entire city along the 101 next to the ocean. A seawall near three properties on Lincoln Avenue in Lincoln Beach collapsed from erosion Saturday morning, with dozens of 35-foot concrete pilings falling onto the beach below. LINCOLN BEACH, Ore. Early Saturday morning, several Lincoln Beach, Oregon, residents awoke to find a seawall on Lincoln Avenue had collapsed from erosion, dozens of its 35-foot tall concrete pilings breaking free and tumbling onto the beach below by Monday afternoon.
Those who set their alarm clocks so they could make camping reservations at 6 a. m. were disappointed Thursday morning when the Oregon State Parks' service didn't work. January 14th was the first day that the department widened the booking window for reservations.
