Shutterstock (TNS) Arguing that the ongoing pandemic has spotlighted the digital divide, the Ohio Senate on Wednesday voted unanimously to put taxpayer dollars behind convincing Internet providers to go the “last mile“ in deploying broadband internet to residential customers.
The chamber separately voted to earmark $465 million in federal coronavirus relief funds to help lower-income Ohioans pay their rent and utility bills during the pandemic.

SCIOTO During its Thursday session, the Scioto County Commissioners reviewed and passed all 12 items on its agenda.
Among the dozen, the commissioners authorized the clerk to advertise a bidding notice for the skyroof system replacement at the county courthouse.
Commissioner Bryan Davis described that situation as a “continued problem,” which covers the rotunda and law library. It is separate from the other portion of the roof.
“We had a professional come in and look at the panels,” he said of the board’s fifth item. “They have reached the end of their life, probably way beyond the life span for those panels.”

Democrats took issue with certain portions of the budget, but its education funding reforms helped lead a dozen of them to ultimately join the Republican majority in approving the bill.

The budget now heads to the Ohio Senate, which will negotiate its own version over the coming months. Members of both legislative chambers will eventually hash out disagreements before a final version is sent to Gov. Mike DeWine for approval this summer.
