Staff Writer CADIZ The village’s water treatment plant upgrades and improvements are set to get underway in the next few months. Cadiz Village Council discussed the project during Thursday’s evening meeting. The expansion project is set to begin in mid-March or early April. Following the meeting, Mayor John Migliore said the $2.3 million project is crucial to provide the village with clean drinking water and also to increase water production capacity. The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency prompted the upgrades after the village’s water source, Tappan Lake, tested positive for small amounts of cyanotoxins, which are produced by harmful algal blooms.

mgreier@salemnews.net SALEM City Utilities Commission members said they’ll review recommended sewer rate increases over the next few months before taking any action. Whatever they decide, Salem City Council members will have final say on whether to increase the sewer rates. The sewer rates have not been touched since 1995 that’s 25 years while the cost of doing business and complying with state mandates have continued to rise every year. A study by the Rural Community Assistance Partnership (RCAP) said the city should enact a $13 per customer increase on the monthly minimum sewer bill and a 2.10 percent increase to the monthly sewer usage rate this year. The study also recommended a $5 per customer increase to the monthly minimum sewer bill and 2.10 percent increase to the monthly sewer usage rate for each additional year through 2025.

Staff Writer MARTINS FERRY As COVID-19 cases continue to rise in the region, Martins Ferry City Council members are preparing to start meeting via Zoom to keep themselves and others safe. After Wednesday’s regular meeting, Council President Kristine Davis said council is planning to discuss spending federal CARES Act funding on the needed equipment during a future finance committee meeting. She said the city still needs to determine what kind of software and hardware it needs to conduct the meetings via Zoom and broadcast them online for the public to view. She said the city’s existing website likely will be the site from which the meetings are eventually streamed. Several local villages and cities have opted to either hold teleconference meetings or stream their meetings because of the pandemic.

The project involves the construction of a septic tank effluent pressure collection system in Dupont and an ORENCO Ax-Max recirculating media filter wastewater treatment plant to serve both Dupont and Cloverdale, according to a press release from the Village of Dupont. Miller Contracting Group Inc. will be doing the work, which is mandated by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. An order issued in December 2008 found individual residences in both the Dupont and Cloverdale were served by an antiquated treatment system.
