The Ohio State University: Cardiac MRI effective in detecting asymptomatic, symptomatic myocarditis in athletes

Share A cardiac MRI of athletes who had COVID-19 is seven times more effective in detecting inflammation of the heart than symptom-based testing, according to a study led by researchers at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and College of Medicine with 12 other Big Ten programs. The findings are published online by JAMA Cardiology. The study of 1,597 COVID-19 positive Big Ten athletes who had cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) screening found 2.3% were diagnosed with myocarditis and most didn’t exhibit symptoms of the rare disease, a leading cause of sudden death in competitive athletes. Of the 37 athletes diagnosed with myocarditis, 28 didn’t exhibit symptoms.

Are Fully Vaccinated People Who Get COVID At Risk For Long Term Symptoms?

Fly View Productions via Getty Images Breakthrough COVID-19 cases are rare and most infections are pretty mild.  The COVID-19 vaccines have been rightly celebrated for driving cases and hospitalizations down across the United States, but no vaccine on the planet offers absolutely perfect protection. (For those curious, that equates to less than 0.01% of people who got vaccinated.) Because those infections have been so rare, however, there is a fair amount experts are still learning about the small number of cases that do happen. And one of the biggest questions right now is if you do experience a breakthrough case, is there a chance you could have long-haul COVID-19?
