Lorainâs 2021 budget is in the works.
On Dec. 16, Lorain City Council held a Finance & Claims Committee meeting, with all of Council, to begin crunching the numbers on the cityâs 2021 spending plan.
Discussion lasted more than 90 minutes as Council, with city Auditor Karen Shawver and Mayor Jack Bradley, discussed various line items for city expenses and revenue forecasted for next year.

Overall the budget has general fund revenues estimated to be about $29.47 million next year, down about 5.5 percent from 2020.
Like many aspects of government and business, the novel coronavirus pandemic was a factor on city expenses in 2020 and in the 2021 budget.
Dec. 7 meeting
KEY ACTION Appointed Will Bellinger to fill the unexpired term of council member Megan Gettan, who resigned in November. The term expires Dec. 31, 2021.
Discussion: Mayor Rebecca Hubble administered the oath of office to Bellinger. There were three applications for the vacant council seat.
In another matter, Mayor Hubble said she appreciates the residents and businesses for stepping up during a rough year. She loves living in the village and wished everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
OTHER ACTION Passed a resolution to distribute Cares Act funding. The village received an additional $12,815 in Cares Act Funding. Of that amount $6,259 will be used for police wages due to the pandemic, the remaining funds will be given to six businesses and four churches and several other areas.

Ohio health officials cited 23 retail stores for not following face mask and social distancing rules during the first week of December.
Each store received a warning. A subsequent violation could close a business for up to 24 hours.
The businesses cited include a mix of mom and pop shops, gas stations and big-name retailers such as Walmart and Lowe s.
The businesses cited were in 13 different counties.
Ohio Bureau of Workers Compensation investigators began inspecting retail stores last month as part of a stricter mask order. The order and inspections don t apply to bars and restaurants, hair salons or other types of businesses.
