eayres@theintelligencer.net WEST LIBERTY West Liberty University’s Board of Governors on Wednesday announced its support of its President W. Franklin Evans, who joined two other local college presidents last month in a public stance against the city of Wheeling’s effort to bring another college to town. The statement released Wednesday aligns WLU’s board with the boards from Wheeling University and West Virginia Northern Community College, which also issued public statements in support of their presidents following an explosive council meeting on March 16. Wheeling city leaders, in their ongoing work to fill vacant buildings at the former Ohio Valley Medical Center which the city acquired last year entered into a memorandum of understanding Jan. 5 with Bluefield State College to establish a branch campus in Wheeling. Derek Redd | Apr 7, 2021 WHEELING Looking around Wheeling Hospital, its inclusion into the West Virginia University Health System is obvious. The “Flying WV,” the logo synonymous with WVU, can be found prominently and abundantly. Yet, Wheeling Hospital CEO Douglass Harrison said that the hospital joining the WVU team is much more than a cosmetic change. It’s a change that he feels will benefit Wheeling and the Ohio Valley immediately and well into the future. “You’re joining a world-class academic health center and health system,” Harrison said. “As a part of that, WVU medicine will provide the resources necessary to make sure Wheeling Hospital is successful. If you look around our system, every hospital that we’ve brought in, if you look from day one and look through a three-year scope, you’ve seen growth.
