As a proud independent voter, I remain convinced the single biggest obstacle we face as a nation is partisan politics.
Every few years, we elect people to go to Washington to do our work. We hire 435 House of Representatives members and 100 senators whom we employ, and pay them with our tax dollars, to carry out the important business of the federal government.
But something strange happens on the way to their office.
After they are done campaigning, shaking hands, and making promises they often know they can’t keep, the votes are counted, victory speeches are made, and they head off to Washington. We hope they leave home with good intentions and do what they said they would do and shepherd our country down a sensible path within the constitutional constraints and rules that govern the process.

London/Taipei, April 30 (CNA) Taiwan is now the most dangerous place on earth as it becomes an arena for the rivalry between China and the United States, the London-base international magazine The Economist warned in its latest issue.
In its May 1 edition, the magazine said in an article that the U.S. strategic ambiguity over Taiwan s security is breaking down and the U.S. is coming to fear that it may no longer be able to deter China from seizing Taiwan by force.

South Carolina Republican Senator Tim Scott will advocate for school choice during the GOP response to President Joe Biden s State of the Union address Tuesday night. Locking vulnerable kids out of the classroom is locking adults out of their future. Our public schools should have reopened months ago. Other countries’ did. Private and religious schools did. Science has shown for months that schools are safe, excerpts of Scott s remarks state. But too often, powerful grown-ups set science aside. And kids like me were left behind. The clearest case for school choice in our lifetimes.

Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) delivered the Republican response to President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address to Congress yesterday, and he did so with dignity, depth, and a touch of elegance. Sen. Scott is reminiscent of the old heads that I grew up under. They didn’t need to dramatize, scream, or shout to get attention or be heard. They spoke with the weight of gravity rimmed with a boundary of hope. It’s the same tone I heard when I listened to my favorite uncle, who is no longer on this earth, and in the voice of my 80-year old aunt, who is still with us and holding strong. It is representative of people who have seen some things, who have had great struggles, but who have come through to a brighter day, and they just want to let you know that you can too.
