The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down about 0.2%, dropping 44 points, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite added 0.5%. The retail sales report was the latest indication the economic recovery may be slowing as coronavirus cases surge in the U.S. Wednesday s data showed U.S. retail sales dropped a seasonally adjusted 1.1% in November from the prior month, with restaurants, department stores and vehicle dealerships reporting sharp sales declines.

Fiscal and monetary stimulus have helped bolster the economy and send the stock market to new heights even as the coronavirus pandemic spread throughout the U.S. The S&P 500 rose 6.55 points, or 0.2%, to 3701.17, just shy of a record. The Nasdaq Composite advanced 63.13 points, or 0.5%, to 12658.19, its 52nd record close of 2020. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 44.77 points, or 0.1%, to 30154.54. Congressional leaders were closing in Wednesday on a roughly $900 billion coronavirus relief deal that was expected to include another round of direct payments to households, The Wall Street Journal reported. The package was also expected to include enhanced unemployment insurance.
