Coimbatore: The district recorded 3,071 fresh cases of Covid-19 on Tuesday, taking the tally to 1,21,884, of which 95,028 have recovered so far. The test positivity rate remained at an alarming 30% on the day.
With only 1,305 patients getting discharged, the number of active cases rose to 25,951. The recovery rate has come down to 77.9%.
The district also recorded 19 Covid deaths, taking the toll to 905. Four of the 19 victims were aged between 30 and 40. Only one of them had comorbidities - tuberculosis - and that patient died after 18 days of hospitalization. The remaining three, who were aged 32, 33 and 35, didn’t have any comorbidities. Another three victims were in the age group of 40-50 years. There continue to be deaths within 24 to 48 hours of hospitalization.
Coimbatore: Pointing out that the new government order mandating allotment of 50% of their bed strength to Covid-19 patients is impossible to practice, a growing number of private hospitals in the district says they don’t have the wherewithal to handle Covid patients including the necessary staff strength, oxygen facilities, facilities for their doctors and nurses to quarantine, pulmonologists and intensive care specialists, among others.
The Indian Medical Association, Tamil Nadu branch, plans to meet the newly appointed health minister on Friday and explain to him that every hospital across the state cannot afford to allot 50% of their bed strength.
“It would lead to mixing of Covid-19 patients with non-Covid patients, which would lead to more spread.
