and EndSARS births the soro soke generation

LANRE ADEWOLE recalls a national tragedy sparked by a revolutionary candour. Ndubuisi Udo, popularly known as “Dele” Udo, was a Nigerian sprinter and a collegiate champion at the University of Missouri in the United States of America in the 70s. Born on 24th May, 1957, the Umuahia-born quarter-miler competed at the 1980 Summer Olympics and the future was looking all wrapped-up, until he visited “home” in July 1981 and a check-point argument with a police officer, irretrievably cut his life, dreams and aspiration. It was one extra-judicial murder by the Nigerian Police that sent shock waves across the country, reverberating world over, despite the limited information technology of the time. He was one of the early numbers of police brutality in Nigeria, which peaked with the coming of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), one of the 14 units in the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (FCID), in November 1992, to “detain, investigate and prosecute viol

Nigerians do not listen | Tribune Online

Share People do not really listen or listen to reply and in many cases not to understand while listening was an important component of leadership. Everyone see themselves as great listeners. After all, what’s easier than sitting down and just hearing what a person has to say? That is why we have judicial commissions of inquiry and panels set up by tweets without instruments and tomorrow some smart listening lawyer will challenge the findings or the entire process, like we are not the same people that have the national assembly, state and local assemblies, people are talking, but really who is listening.

UK raises extreme concern after recording 53,135 new COVID-19 cases in 24 hours, 414 deaths in 28 days

Share The United Kingdom (UK) has recorded its highest daily increase in COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began with 53,135 positive tests, the Guardian of London reported on Tuesday. The Department of Health also confirmed a further 414 people have died within 28 days of developing COVID-19, bringing the UK coronavirus death toll to 71,567. Separate figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies show that more than 87,000 deaths involving coronavirus have now occurred in the UK. The total number of coronavirus cases in the UK has now risen to 2,382,865. But the figures for deaths and cases are likely to be higher as Scotland was not releasing death data between December 24 and 28, and Northern Ireland was not providing either case or death data over that same period.

FG/ASUU faceoff: When education loses priority

Share THE year 2020 will go down in history as recording one of the longest of all strike actions embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in Nigeria. ASUU had commenced the strike on March 9, 2020 which was suspended on December 23, 2020. Accordingly, the strike is likely to be resumed in 2021 going by the trust issues between the Federal Government mediation team led by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige and the representatives of ASUU led by its president, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, on some contending issues. Several meetings were held by both parties coupled with the interventions of President Muhammadu Buhari at a point and the National Assembly, yet it appears there is no permanent end in sight in what Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore’s legendary president, would describe as “pernicious British-style trade union practices”.
