Mayor, reeve positive with many projects on the way in Weyburn area

Mayor Roy said he has a “very optimistic view” with commodity prices doing well right now for both oil and agriculture. With oil prices staying above $60 a barrel for the past while, there are more people getting back to work again, including with the well abandonment program. With recent conversations with the chamber’s new executive director, Larry Heggs, the mayor said the mayors caucus would like to urge chambers of commerce to push the province to go back to supporting the film industry again. He pointed out how, as an example, Ghostbusters 3 had initially looked at Saskatchewan for production, but when it was found there were no tax incentives available here for that industry, they moved production to Alberta.

Once the People’s Choice exhibition has wrapped up, the Allie Griffin Art Gallery will no longer be used for art exhibits. There are preparations to replace this gallery with the new gallery in the Credit Union Spark Centre, which will house the arts and recreation programs for the City of Weyburn. An exhibit entitled “Living Skies”, featuring works by Kelly Meng Stephenson, is on display at the Weyburn Credit Union gallery from now until April 29. Stephenson was the top winner of last year’s People’s Choice exhibition. The next featured artist at the gallery will be Kendra Garbe.

Weyburn city council approves tenders for parks maintenance equipment

They included a wide area mower, two 72-inch mowers, a utility work machine with attachments and an electric turf utility vehicle. The latter two pieces of equipment are new purchases for the Credit Union Spark Centre, while the mowers are for use by the parks department. The tender for the two 72-inch mowers were awarded to Tractorland of Regina at a bid price of $41,254, with a trade-in. The wide area mower and the electric turf utility machine were both awarded to South Country Equipment, in the amounts of $79,075 and $16,855 respectively, and the utility work machine tender was awarded to Bobcat of Regina at the bid price of $88,170. All three of these equipment pieces do not include a trade-in.
