Evglevski on target for Tokyo Olympics with impressive display
Victoria’s Sergei Evglevski produced another world class performance in the men’s 25m Rapid Fire Pistol when the Australian Olympic Shooting team competed in a national online event from Shepparton.
With COVID-19 border restrictions preventing all athletes contesting from one location, athletes competed simultaneously across the country on electronic targets.
Evglevski, who will make his Olympic debut in Tokyo next month, registered an outstanding qualifying score of 585 from a possible 600 points before equalling his Australian record of 32 hits from a possible 40 in the final.
Evglevksi’s qualifying scores would have earned him a place in both the 2016 Rio Olympic Games and 2018 ISSF World Championship finals, while his score in the final would have snared the 2016 Olympic Games silver medal and a shoot-off for gold at the 2018 World Championships.

Tokyo Olympics: petition against Laurel Hubbard highlights debate on transgender athletes Nadia Lam © AFP Laurel Hubbard competes during the women s +90kg weightlifting final at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia. Photo: AFP
Nine months after starting hormone therapy in 2004, transgender distance runner Joanna Harper found she was 12 per cent slower than she was beforehand - equal to the difference between the performance of male and female distance runners.
This led her to start studying transgender athletes, and since 2005 she has tracked the performance of about 40 sportspeople after they transitioned. She is now a PhD researcher at Loughborough University in the UK and author of the book Sporting Gender.
