By WYATT OLSON | STARS AND STRIPES Published: March 16, 2021 U.S. Air Force and Coast Guard aircraft joined a merchant ship Friday to rescue five mariners in Micronesia whose boat had been missing for three days after running out of gas. The mariners, on a fishing trip aboard a 23-foot skiff, were rescued in the vicinity of Houk Island, Chuuk, one of four states of the Federated States of Micronesia, the Coast Guard said in a news release Saturday. The Coast Guard in Guam was notified Thursday evening of the missing fishing crew by someone in Oregon, a Coast Guard spokesman, Petty Officer 2nd Class Matthew West, told Stars and Stripes on Monday.
