Millions in rental assistance remains unspent

Processing delays and the fact that many on the coast pay their rent under the table have plagued a state program that has only doled out a fraction of the $70 million set aside to help San Mateo County residents pay their rent in the midst of a devastating pandemic. After the coronavirus pandemic shut down industries statewide last year, California instituted a ban on evictions to help renters newly out of work. The ban is set to expire June 30, when some residents will owe more than a year’s worth of rent or face eviction. The state’s newly launched Housing Is Key program is designed to get Californians out of rental debt and make up for lost landlord income to keep people housed, but less than 1 percent of that money is in the hands of local renters.

County joins pause on J&J vaccines

The state of California and San Mateo County are pausing their distribution of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine in line with federal advice that came on Tuesday. Five hundred doses in the county will be temporarily suspended this week. The pause is the result of an announcement from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration warning that six of the 6.8 million people who have received the vaccine also developed rare blood clots. According to the CDC’s announcement, one of the affected people, women between the ages of 18 and 48, has been hospitalized and another died. There is no evidence right now linking the vaccine to the blood clots, and the recommendation to pause injections is not a federal order.

New state guidance paves way for hotel events

Late last month, CEO of the San Mateo County/Silicon Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau John Hutar came in front of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors with one request: help hoteliers plead to the state for guidance, or at least a date, when they may be allowed to host conferences and corporate meetings again. County leaders agreed to advocate on behalf of local hotels and were poised to take action. But just weeks later, California finally released its guidance for events after more than a year of local hotels bleeding event-related revenue. It was the last state to do so.
