An experienced canyoneer died after falling 95 feet in Death Valley National Park last Saturday in what officials described as a freak accident.
Justin Ibershoff, 38, of Los Angeles, was descending on a challenging route in Deimos Canyon with six friends when he apparently stepped on a rock that shifted.
That triggered a rockslide that swept Ibershoff past two fellow canyoneers and over the edge of a steep slope, said Abby Wines, management assistant at Death Valley National Park.

A California hiker has died after getting swept up in a rockslide that sent him over the edge of a cliff, causing him to fall nearly 100 feet, the National Park Service (NPS) says.
The incident involving Justin Ibershoff, a 38-year-old from Los Angeles, unfolded Saturday while he was descending a technical route down Deimos Canyon in Death Valley National Park with six of his very experienced friends, according to officials. He apparently stepped on a rock that moved, triggering a rockslide that swept him past two companions and over the edge of the 95-foot-tall dry fall, NPS said in a statement.

Gen. Walter Rugen, who is in charge of Army aviation modernization, told Defense News in a recent interview. Edge 21 which stands for Experimental Demonstration Gateway Exercise will be held at Dugway Proving Ground, Utah, in May, Rugen said, and will serve as a gateway event for Project Convergence 21.
