Laboon’s liberty port visit to Souda Bay provided Sailors the opportunity to relax from underway operations and a chance to venture out in town while, being in compliance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Department of Defense and host nation COVID-19 mitigation measures. All personnel who participated in the port visit are fully vaccinated.
“We are all ambassadors of the United States whenever we visit different countries and Laboon’s crew performed exceptionally well during our time in Souda Bay,” said Cmdr. Charles Spivey, commanding officer USS Laboon (DDG 58). “It was a great opportunity for our Sailors to experience the sights and sounds of Greece. Laboon is the first ship to conduct off-base liberty in the U.S. Sixth Fleet area of operations in over a year since the start of the global COVID-19 pandemic and was able to reach a 98% vaccination rate across the command prior to our arrival.”

Kaiser-class underway replenishment oiler USNS Pecos (T-AO 197), and the Lewis and Clark-class dry cargo ship USNS Charles Drew

CSG 5 operated in international waters with JMSDF’s Hyuga-class helicopter destroyer JS Ise (DDH 182) to exercise maritime maneuvers, strengthen the U.S.-Japan alliance, and improve regional security.
“Operating at sea with our allies in the JMSDF ensures we can face a range of maritime challenges together, now and in the future,” said Rear Adm. Will Pennington, commander, Task Force 70, Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 5. “These operations have engaged our whole strike group and given our respective teams renewed confidence to meet our missions across the region.”
