Santa Maria has appointed Todd Tuggle as interim fire chief following the retirement of Chief Leonard Champion
SANTA MARIA, Calif. - Santa Maria has appointed a new interim fire chief following the retirement of Chief Leonard Champion.
Santa Maria city manager Jason Stilwell announced Wednesday that Deputy Fire Chief Todd Tuggle will be assuming the role of chief beginning Saturday. Champion announced his retirement earlier this month.
Tuggle has been with the Santa Maria Fire Department since February and previously served 17 years with the Fresno Fire Department.
Tuggle graduated from Cal Poly in the 90s and in 2016 he earned his Master of Arts in Homeland Security from the Naval Postgraduate School.

Santa Maria has appointed Todd Tuggle as the city s new interim fire chief starting Dec. 19.
Chief Tuggle is a Cal Poly graduate who served with the City of Fresno Fire Department for 17 years.
He earned his master of arts in homeland security from the Naval Postgraduate School in 2016.
The Santa Maria Fire Department has six fire stations and 75 positions.
Each year, crews respond to about 10,000 service calls.

DECEMBER 14, 2020 – The 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, stunned the world with a dazzling light show made up of a record-breaking 1,218 drones, all dancing in harmony. In the Department of Defense (DOD), though, the display reinvigorated interest in counter-swarm tactics research, for drones and swarming tactics can have applications in all warfighting domains.
Through funding provided by the DOD to the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), Professors Isaac Kaminer and Abe Clark will lead the development of a counter-swarming analysis toolbox. The program is supported by NPS’ Consortium for Robotics and Unmanned Systems Education and Research (CRUSER), a group that responds directly to Fleet and Force research needs.
