MUMBAI: On most early mornings, Bhaucha Dhakka, or New Ferry Wharf, is usually packed as trawlers unload tons of mackerel, shrimp, and ribbon fish for export. But this week, the fishing dock was not that busy - less than half the usual number of boats had arrived.
The pandemic has hit Maharashtra s trawl boats in an unexpected way. New Covid-19 safety rules in China, India s largest seafood destination, have delayed shipments and depressed fish prices. With payments stuck and rising diesel prices, multi-day trips have become unviable for many. More than half of the state s 4,290-strong trawl fleet has been grounded since January, according to Ramdas Sandhe, chairman of the Maharashtra Rajya Macchimar

Seafood exporters in India are becoming increasingly worried about difficulties shipping to China in advance of the Lunar New Year holiday.
In the latter half of 2020, Chinese authorities reportedly detected coronavirus on the packaging of imported seafood and, in response, imposed bans on a number of exporters and implemented strict inspection measures on seafood imports. As a result, a huge number of containers of imported frozen seafood have piled up in the Chinese ports of Dalian and Tianjin as local authorities conduct COVID testing, which is now required for all seafood products passing through customs.

Exporters yet to get ₹2,500-crore MEIS support due from April last year
The crisis-ridden seafood sector has sought the Centre’s support for the release of ₹2,500-crore under MEIS (Merchandise Exports from India Scheme) since April last year.
MEIS refunds are pending with the government which, in turn, has put tremendous pressure on the working capital especially on MSME units in the sector, said Alex K Ninan, President of Seafood Exporters Association of India - Kerala region.

He added that the banks have not waived any interest or their charges during the lockdown period. Instead, they have granted only additional loans with a higher rate of interest by withholding promissory notes and personal securities unlike the government’s order.
