Experts shed light on maritime security and growth opportunities in region
The 9th Inte¬rnational Maritime Conference (IMC) 2021, being organised by the National Institute of Maritime Affairs under the aegis of Pakistan Navy, and conducted in tandem with the 7th Multinational Maritime Exercise Aman-2021, reached its second day on Sunday.
The conference themed on ‘Development of Blue Economy under a Secure and Sustainable Environment: A Shared Future for Western Indian Ocean Region’ featured more eminent international and national scholars who elucidated a variety of issues pertaining to maritime security, the environment and relevant growth opportunities in the region.
Like the previous day, the second day of the conference was also divided into three sessions. Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on National Security Dr Moeed Yusuf graced the first session as the chief guest. The Marine Education, Research and Rehabilitation Institute rescued a gray seal pup near the Cape Henlopen State Park’s Great Dune Feb. 12.
According to a Feb. 15 press release from MERR, the female pup is about three weeks old and very small. The pup was huddled up against the dune when she was spotted by a beach walker who reported her to MERR, said the press release. Since she was rescued on Valentine s Day weekend, she was nicknamed Cupid.
Cupid had some small wounds near her head, possibly from a bite from another seal. A pup this young is still dependent on its mother for food, so the decision was made to rescue her since she could not survive on her own, said the release.

The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) has launched in Bacolod City a training institute that aims to provide global leadership training to all maritime professionals.
The MARINA Training Institute (MarTI) in Bacolod, situated at the agency’s Western Visayas regional office in Barangay Mansilingan, is the academic arm of MARINA.

It is envisioned to become the country’s Maritime Innovation and Knowledge Center under Program 8 of the 10-year Maritime Industry Development Plan (MIDP).
MARINA Administrator Vice Admiral Robert A. Empedrad said MarTI intends to improve the agency’s capacity to innovate and operate modern technologies and help in addressing the changing trends in the maritime industry, as well as “to serve as a systematic educational and training system/facility.”
