170-acre wildfire in Lakewood damages dozens of homes, businesses

LAKEWOOD – The threat of fire continues Monday after a wind-fueled wildfire closed the Garden State Parkway, burned at least 170 acres and damaged dozens of homes and commercial buildings in Lakewood and Brick. Several smaller fires also burned across the state on Sunday. The New Jersey Forest Fire Service also said that one of its firefighters is in critical condition at a nearby hospital. He began immediate CPR and called for backup with Lt Matt Sharin, Sgt Brian Egan and Ptl Zach Bell arriving on scene a short time later to assist with life saving measures. They performed CPR until Allenhurst First Aid and paramedics arrived on scene. As paramedics got there, officers were able to regain a pulse and the man was brought to the hospital where he is receiving care as of this morning.

Get our free mobile app Police said Robin Federbush, 49, of Brick was turning left in a Hyundai Elantra from Spiral Drive to Burnt Tavern Road when she hit Christos Michael, 59, of Point Pleasant, who had the right of way at the time, and was then thrown from his Bourget Custom Motorcycle. Michael died from his injuries at the scene of the crash from lower body and internal injuries. The Brick Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit responded to the scene to investigate the crash. Vehicule traffic on Burnt Tavern Road northbound and southbound was detoured around the crash scene for about five hours, police said, during the investigation.

As you may also be aware, the legislation, which passed the State Legislature without any Republican support, and the unprecedented “clean-up” legislation, Assembly Bill No. 5342, are riddled with dangerous public policy decisions, putting our communities, and especially our children and families, at risk. Though we were unable to prevent passage of the legislation, I am still determined to right this wrong, and I write to you now asking for your support in that endeavor. Among the most offensive provisions of the new laws is the treatment of underage possession offenses.
